Digital connection with the global water sector

Friday, 14 February, 2020

Climate change is influencing extreme weather events around the world, linking to extended drought periods, intensity of extreme rainfall leading to floods and harsher fire weather. Adaptation, building resilience, and meeting needs and expectations for clean food and liveability, requires global solutions and local adoption.

In today’s digital world, the Australian Water School offers new ways of learning through online training and informational webinars. The School reaches over 130 developed and developing countries, providing access to new science and research, advances in technology, innovation and thought leadership in water policy and regulation.

These programmes have been successful in facilitating the transfer of knowledge from key research agencies including Australia’s leading research organisation, CSIRO, the Bureau of Meteorology Water Research Australia, the Goyder Institute and leading Australian universities. The School’s mission is to support the professional development across wide range of critical water related topics, and across all levels of knowledge and achievement.

Designed to contribute to the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the webinar programme provides an independent platform for live discussion and facilitates access to Australian and international expertise, thought leadership and best practice, and is unique in the world for its scope, frequency and relevance to international communities.

Our digital strategy has generated communities of interest, particularly in the area of water modelling, both surface and groundwater, addressing topics including flood mitigation, dam breach prediction and commercial pipe flow risk reduction.

Other topics of significant interest have been on gender, equity and water management, Indigenous values, blending traditional knowledge with new science, citizen science and water literacy.
